Red Horner

George Reginald "Red" Horner (* May 29, 1909 in Lynden, Ontario, † April 27, 2005 in Toronto, Ontario ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played from 1928 to 1940 for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League.

Career

Red Horner began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Marlboros, for which he was active from 1926 to 1929 in the Ontario Hockey Association. After he started the 1928/29 season at the Marlboros, the defender was on January 20, 1929 committed by the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League, for whom he played until 1940 a total of twelve years. During this time Horner missed with his team in season 1929/30, the Playoffs and won with his team's 1932 Stanley Cup. This was both for him and for the follow-up team the Toronto St. Patricks, Toronto Maple Leafs, the first win the prestigious trophy.

After retiring from professional hockey Horner was a businessman and lived in Florida and Toronto. In 1965, he was surprisingly included in the Hockey Hall of Fame, although he was never considered exceptionally good player, which caused some controversy over this decision. This decision is mainly due to the fact that Horner in eight consecutive seasons, most penalty minutes of NHL players received and also the most penalty minutes in total of all NHL players had until Ted Lindsay could this record late 1950s break.
