Red Slate Mountain

Red Slate Mountain, as seen from the north.

The Red Slate Mountain is the highest mountain in the Sherwin Range, which is part of the Sierra Nevada. The mountain is part of the ridge (Sierra Crest ), which forms the border of Fresno County and Mono County ( California).

Generally

The summit of Red Slate Mountain can be climbed only on a via ferrata. A via ferrata starts at the McGee Pass, another begins on Bighorn Lake.

The Red Slate Mountain was named by the California Geological Survey, 1873. It is unclear, however, whether the name was originally considered this mountain, or the mountain now called the Red -and- White Mountain.

Geology

The area north of Red Slate Mountain is the seismically most active region in California. The local earthquakes are associated with the nearby Long Valley Caldera.
