Redemption (2012 film)

Redemption is an American documentary short film by directors Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill from 2012. The film depicts the situation of Canners, the people in the American metropolis of New York City that are dependent by collecting of returnable bottles and cans to provide for their livelihood. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best Short Documentary ".

Content

Production

The idea for the documentary was by Sheila Nevins, head of the documentary department at the HBO television. After she had noticed a bottle collectors, they raised the question of the personal stories and backgrounds of these people. Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill began with the work on the documentation, which lasted about two and a half years. In the first few months they first tried without a camera, to make contacts in the community of the bottle and can collector in order to create a basis of trust. So they were increasingly informed about the processes and the way people interact, what helped them to talk to their documentation with the people. In early 2010 they started filming, and finally they had footage to produce a full-length documentary can.
