Redon, Ille-et-Vilaine

Redon is a commune with 9576 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ille -et -Vilaine in the Brittany region.

Geography

Redon is located at the confluence of the River Oust in the Vilaine. The navigable Canal de Nantes à Brest crosses here the Vilaine and follows the River Oust towards the west and towards the east the river Isac. This Redon has become a major waterway crossing in Brittany. The channel today but more important for tourism.

History

In the year 832 founded Conuvoion, a Breton monk with the help of the Carolingian emperor Louis the Pious in Redon the Abbey of Saint- Sauveur. Around its abbey slowly developed a small rural community.

In the Middle Ages, the city benefited from its location on the Vilaine, since the trade goods on ocean-going ships to the Vilaine Redon could be transported upwards. There the goods were transhipped and transported on barges on towards Rennes, capital of Brittany. In the 19th century, Redon experienced by the construction of the Canal de Nantes à Brest another heyday. Even today, the old shipowner houses and the large harbor of its history as a trading port.
