Reduced vertical separation minima

The RVSM airspace ( RVSM Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum =; dtsch Reduced Vertical graduation ) is a specification for minimum vertical distance of airways or aircraft. It was introduced on 24 January 2002 as a result of the increasing density of air traffic over Europe. Prior to RVSM was already over the Atlantic to use. Meanwhile, it is also used in the U.S. and Canada to accommodate more aircraft on the airways.

RVSM is in the altitude range of 29,000 feet to 41,000 feet for use. Here aircraft previously scaled at a vertical distance of 2,000 feet to each other. With RVSM this to 1,000 feet (300 m ) was reduced. In the airspace below 29,000 feet has always flown with 1,000 feet graduation. About 41,000 feet 2,000 feet continue to be used as the vertical distance.

For flight in RVSM specific equipment is required, which allow a sufficiently accurate indication and a sufficiently accurate compliance with the altitude by the autopilot. The requirements for flying in RVSM airspace are:

  • 2 independent altimeter,
  • A device for indicating when leaving the predetermined height,
  • An autopilot, which can keep the height and
  • A transponder with altitude transmission and connection to the height gauge.
