Redwood River in Camden State Park ( 2007)

The Redwood River is a 205 km long tributary of the Minnesota River in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Minnesota. About the Minnesota River it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River and drains an area of 1826 km ² in an agricultural region. It is believed that the name of the river is guided by the reddish bark of the Horn shrub that grows along the waters in the region.

The source of the Redwood River is located in Aetna Township in the northeast of Pipestone County, about six kilometers west of Ruthton on the Coteau des Prairies, a morainic plateau which separates the basin of the Mississippi River from the Missouri River. Initially, the river flows as a non-permanent stream running through Ruthton in the north-western Murray County and then north into Lyon County, where it changes its direction to the northeast and flows through Russell, Lynd and Marshall. Between Russell and Marshall the river leaves the plateau in a wooded valley and falls 90 m within 24 km; Camden State Park is located in this section of the river.

Below the Marshall Redwood flows through a flat plane and then turns eastward in the Redwood County, where it passes Vesta and Seaforth. Parts of this river sections were converted to agricultural ditches. In Redwood Falls the river enters the wooded valley of the Minnesota River. He gets off at the Alexander Ramsey City Park on granite steps to less than two kilometers distance around 30 m. Shortly after passing the city opens Redwood River, Minnesota River.

A dam that forms Lake Redwood in Redwood Falls, originally served a hydroelectric plant, but we now entertain only for the purpose of recreation.

The main tributaries of the Redwood River is 60 km long Coon Creek, the Lake Benton rises in Lincoln County and opens by a western course in Russell, the Three Mile Creek, which rises in Lincoln County and about 81 km north-east and then south-east direction by the Lyon County flows, then downriver einzumünden of Marshall in the Redwood River, and of the 16 km long Ramsey Creek which connects over a waterfall in Redwood Falls with the Redwood River.

Approximately 82 % of the watershed of Redwood Rivers is used for agricultural purposes. Primarily for the cultivation of corn and soybean Hundreds of miles of streams have been straightened and therefore serve agricultural purposes.
