Reed Larson

Reed David Larson ( born July 30, 1956 in Minneapolis, Minnesota ) is a retired American professional ice hockey defender, who was active in the National Hockey League for the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres.

Career

Reed Larson began his career for the ice hockey team of the Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis and the Minnesota Fighting Saints 1974 Draft in the 16th round at position 220 was in the WHA Amateur selected. Larson but decided for now against the step in the professional field and went to the University of Minnesota where he played for the college team. In his first year, he moved with the Minnesota Gophers advance to the Finals of the National University championship of the NCAA, where they were beaten Michigan Technological University documents.

In the 1975/76 season it was for revenge and this time Minnesota emerged victorious from the finale. Larson had developed in the year to the best defender of his team and was struck by his abilities on the offensive. The Detroit Red Wings finally chose him in the NHL Amateur Draft 1976 in the second round at position 22.

Larson played the first half of the following season or for the university team, made ​​his professional debut but finally on 12 February 1977 in the NHL when he met with the Detroit Red Wings in his home town on the Minnesota North Stars.

1977/78 he played his first full season in the NHL and had no problems to establish itself. Especially in the power play, he was equally firm support of the Red Wings, where he could use his hard slap shot and the season ended as the third- best scorer of the team with 60 points from 75 games. He presented simultaneously the NHL record for the rookie defenseman with the most points scorer.

In the following seasons, he drew on these services. In nine seasons with Detroit, he was once branded as 60 points, scored in five consecutive years, more than 20 goals each and had 1982/83 his best season with 74 points scorer. Three times he was therefore invited to the NHL All-Star Game, a success with the team remained, however, since the Red Wings with Larson only three times reached the playoffs.

During the 1985/86 season he transferred the Detroit Red Wings to the Boston Bruins. Larson was at the time of his departure from Detroit record holder as the top scoring defender in the history of the franchise.

In Boston came Larson, also due to injury, no longer benefits from the previous years approach. In 1988 he reached the final with the Bruins for the Stanley Cup, but where they lost and he left the team just a few weeks later. Larson then received a contract with the Edmonton Oilers, but after ten players released him again and he moved in December 1988 to the New York Islanders. But after three months was also his time with the Islanders to an end, the stars of charges it to the Minnesota North, where he finished the season. For all three teams he came in 54 games on 38 points. Nevertheless, he was initially a contract more in the NHL.

1989 Larson went to Europe, where he played for HC Alleghe in the Italian Serie A. In the spring of 1990 he returned to North America, where he gave the Buffalo Sabres a contract until the end of the season, but he only came in one game to use.

The next four years were spent Larson back to Italy and played there for Alleghe HC Milano Saima and HC CourmAosta, he also oversaw the same time as a coach.

In the 1994/95 season he was once again making a comeback in North America, as he completed nine games for the Manitoba Moose of the IHL second-rate. Then he finally ended his career.

1996 Reed Larson was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and received the 2006 Lester Patrick Trophy for his contributions to the sport of ice hockey in the United States.

Internationally

Reed Larson participated with the U.S. National Team in two international tournaments. In the 1981 World Championship, he reached with the U.S. team to fifth place and played a few months later at the 1981 Canada Cup a second time in the jersey of his home country.

Reed Larson presented in the course of his career on several records, which, however, have mostly no longer exist.

He set records on for most goals, assists and points all born in the United States players. He also led the list of best defender of the Detroit Red Wings with 570 points scorer and put in the 1982/83 season franchise record with 52 assists and 74 points by a defender.
