Refuge des Cosmiques

The Refuge of Cosmiques is a refuge in the French Mont Blanc massif and an important base for the ascent of Mont Blanc.

The cabin is located south of Chamonix. It stands on a 3613 m high ice and rock outcrop about 500 meters north of the 3532 m high saddle Col du Midi, the Aiguille du Midi connects the Mont Blanc du Tacul ( 4248 m) ( 3842 m). To the west, falling steep rock and ice walls off to about 800 meters below the Glacier des Bossons, to the east leads the Vallée Blanche down to the Glacier du Tacul and thus to the Mer de Glace.

The Refuge of Cosmiques is an important starting point for the ascent of Mont Blanc via Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit. Since the construction of the cable car to the Aiguille du Midi in 1955, it is almost exclusively achieved from there. From Italy, the Aiguille du Midi can also be reached via the lift that takes Vallée Blanche. The road from the mountain station only takes about 30 minutes, every other approach routes to the refuge are extremely difficult and tedious.

The Cosmiques Hut is now serviced from mid- February to mid-October. Outside this period, the nearby small Simond hut stands ( built in 1942 ) as a winter room.

The lodge was founded in the 1930s on the initiative of the physicist Louis Leprince Ringuet - back, who wanted to investigate cosmic rays here. From this initial determination is also the name of the cottage derives. By 1990, among other things, air pollution was examined by the Centre national de la recherche scientifique. After a fire, the cabin was built and is now operated by the Association of Mountain Guides Chamonix.
