Refuge Ottorino Mezzalama

The Rifugio Ottorino Mezzalama is a refuge in the Aosta Valley in the Valais Alps. It lies at an altitude of 3036 m in the valley Valle d' Ayas near the glacier Ghiacciaio di Verra within the municipality of Ayas. The lodge is run from early July to late September and offers at this time 36 climbers sleeps.

Rise

From Saint- Jacques, a district of Ayas, you reach the village of Blanchard, which lies at the confluence of the headwaters of mountain stream Evançon Verra and Courtod. After the bridge, take the path that leads up into the valley of the brook Verra. Once you reach the hamlet Fiery, the path splits; follow him right down to the level of the Pian di Verra (2050m ). On, on a gravel road leads up to the beginning of the Alm Pian di Verra. Even under the mountain pasture left and follow the path that rises above a steep grassy slope. After crossing a plateau up to the edge of the moraine you follow this to the hut.

The refuge can be reached from the district of Saint -Jacques within 4 hours.

History

The refuge in their present appearance was inaugurated in 1934 and ending in 1987 thoroughly renovated. It was Ottorino Mezzalama (1888-1931), dedicated to a climber from Turin, who came by an avalanche on the glacier Ghiacciaio di Malavalle in Bardonecchia killed.
