Refugio is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Refugio County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies at the intersection of U.S. Highways 183 and 77 on the north bank of the Mission River in southeast Texas, about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico is removed and has a total area of 4.1 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,941 people in 1,128 households and 788 families. The population density was 727.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 74.53 % White, 13.40% Black or African American, 0.51 % Native American, 0.51 % Asian, 0.10 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 9.38 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.56% were of mixed descent, and 44.30 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,128 households, 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.5 % were married couples living together. 18.2% were single mothers and 30.1% were non-families. 27.3 % of all households were single-person households, and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size amounted to 3.08.

26.7 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 % from 18 to 24, 25.1% 25-44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 85.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,719, and the median income for a family $ 32,237. Males have a median income of $ 33,021 versus $ 15,549 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,523. 21.1 % of the population and 16.8 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 26.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 20.9% of those 65 or older.
