Reggie Lewis
Reggie Lewis ( born November 21, 1965 in Baltimore, † July 27, 1993 in Waltham, Massachusetts) was a basketball player from the United States. He ran in the years 1987 to 1993 for the Boston Celtics.
Career
A native of Baltimore, he came across the Dunbar High School in the North East College in Boston and was drafted in 1987 in the first round with the 22nd pick. In his rookie season, he played an average of only 8.3 minutes per game, scoring 4.5 points. In his second season Larry Bird was injured from almost the entire season. Lewis jumped and reached at an average operating time of 32.3 minutes an average of 18.5 points. In the 1990/91 season, he was a valuable sixth man in the squad of the Celtics and managed in the following 1991-92 season made it into the starting lineup. Following the resignation Birds Lewis took over the office of the captain at the Celtics. He was elected for the only time in the All- Star team in 1992 and recorded in 15 minutes seven points and four rebounds. Overall, he scored in his last two seasons with the Celtics 20.8 points per game and reached a career average of 17.6 points per use. He played in 401 of 410 possible games from the start of season 1988 / 89-1992 / 1993.
Death
In 1993, he led the Celtics in the playoffs against the Charlotte Hornets. In game one on April 29, a hitherto undetected heart defect occurred. Lewis collapsed on the field and fell for the rest of the playoffs. Boston lost the playoff series with 1:3. On 27 July 1993 Lewis started training again. At his former University, Northeastern, he practiced his dreaded jump shots when he collapsed again and died of his heart defect.
The Boston Celtics moved back to his death, his jersey number # 35, she hangs him honor in their original home ground, the Matthews Arena. In Roxburry, Massachusetts has also opened up the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, which bears his name.
