Reggie Workman

Reginald David Workman ( born June 26, 1937 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz bassist and high school teachers.

Life and work

Workman received as a child piano lessons and learned in high school tuba first, before turning to the double bass. He first played with Al Grey, then in rhythm and blues groups. He then went to New York City, where he worked with Lee Morgan. Then he worked for Jackie McLean, Kenny Dorham, Gigi Gryce (1958 /59), Red Garland (1959 ), Roy Haynes and John Coltrane ( Africa/Brass1960/61 ). He was then a member of the band by James Moody before he played from 1962 to 1964 ( Free for All ) at the Jazz Messengers by Art Blakey and also went to Japan and Europe tour with them. Subsequently he was a member of the group of Al Heath, Yusef Lateef (1965 ), Herbie Mann (1966) and Thelonious Monk ( 1967). He took also with musicians such as Eric Dolphy, Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter ( JuJu, 1964, Adam 's Apple, 1966), Lee Morgan ( Search for the New Land in 1964 ), Bill Dixon, Roy Ayers, Archie Shepp, Andrew Hill, Gary Bartz, Pharoah Sanders ( Karma, 1969) and Bobby Hutcherson, and joined the New York Jazz Quartet and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. At the beginning of 1970, he completed a university degree and played in the bands of Alice Coltrane, Charles Tolliver, and Max Roach. He then worked for Babatunde Olatunjis Center for African Cultures.

Since 1987 he is professor at the New School for Social Research. He also talked on musical projects with which he recorded too, so " Duet " with Dee Dee Bridgewater, " Super Jazz Trio" with Tommy Flanagan and Joe Chambers and "Images " with Marilyn Crispell, Don Byron, Gerry Hemingway and Jeanne Lee. Among the recordings of the 1990s, especially the CDs with Mal Waldron must be mentioned, which were partly in Europe. In addition, Workman played with musicians of different styles such as Aki Takase, Marion Brown, Horace Tapscott, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Edward Vesala, Derek Bailey and Living Colour. Under Reggie Workman's name only a few plates appeared.

His daughter is the cellist Nioka Workman.
