Regifugium

The Regifugium (Latin literally means " King flight"; well Fugalia ) was a festival in ancient Rome, which took place on 24 February.

On the origin of this festival there was in ancient times different opinions. According to Varro and Ovid the expulsion of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last Roman king should traditionally be dated BC, thought to the year 510/509. The oldest surviving text above is included in the fasting Ovid; he begins:

The Greek polymath Plutarch did not agree with this view. He was of the opinion that after the abolition of the monarchy the Rex Sacrorum, the religious followers of the king approached, although this held no political and military functions, offer up a public peace-offerings at this festival on the Komitium and subsequently by as quickly as possible forum to flee. The " flight of the King ", therefore, is the disappearance of Rex Sacrorum.
