Life

Time as abbot

Reginbald II of Dillingen, also Regimbald, Benedictines from the monastery of St. Gall, was ahead of his time as bishop of Speyer, abbot of the monastery St. Ulrich and Afra Augsburg (around 1012-1015 ), then of the monastery Ebersberg, he made a canon- transformed into a Benedictine monastery, and eventually the imperial abbey of St. Nazario in Lorsch ( 1018-1032 ). From Lorsch founded Reginbald the Heiligenberg Abbey, also called Michael Monastery, near Heidelberg. 1023 he was with nine other abbots on Mainzer provincial synod under Archbishop Aribo in Blessed City in 1027, he took part in the Synod of Frankfurt.

Bishop of Speyer - Cathedral Building

Emperor Conrad II summoned the monk in 1032 as Bishop of Speyer.

Bishop Reginbald and Gumbert, Abbot of Limburg were the main builder on 2 Speyer Cathedral. Both came from the school of St. Gallen, especially the knowledge of architecture, geometry and arithmetic were taught. The stylistic clarity and sublime monumentality of the building are certainly due to these two disciples of St. Gallen.

The already completed the main choir of St. Mary's Cathedral donated the chief shepherd a valuable chandelier of gilt copper, with an inscription itself sealed verses. Speyer chronicler, Vicar Wolfgang Bauer ( † 1516) has seen claims to the chandeliers of Blessed Reginbald in Speyer cathedral itself and provides us with the sealed by the bishop inscription, Philipp Simonis, 1608, in "Historical description of all Bischoffen at Spires " has translated into German. During the first verse is a general description of the heavenly majesty of God, the second part represents a dedication to Mary, and Bishop Dompatronin Reginbald is also called himself therein:

" Virgin, child-bearer of God, the world fame, life and hope, noble bud of purity, sprung from royal family! King of all kings You gebarst to the fullness of times, wore the eternal Word in your virginal womb! To you I dedicate this work Reginbald, poor bishop, for the wretched burden of my sins. No, not so much I bring to Thee, as I owe you. So small the gift, but look at me in the chamber of your heart. It would be much more what would you want to prepare my gift! So God the Father and Son and Holy Spirit now be merciful to me! He may give me insight and stable good will! "

1033 he took part in the consecration of the rebuilt St. Peter's Church in White Castle, as in 1035 at the consecration of altars in Limburg monastery. He is also found in 1038 among the members of the synod, which discussed the calendrical beginning of Advent. In white castle were hung in the new church dedicated to a similar chandelier as in Speyer, still exists from which a copy. He was so famous that White Castle after this crown-like chandelier, was called up into the 19th century as " Kronweissenburg ". Possibly. the bishop had there received the suggestion to the foundation of Speyer chandelier.

Bishop Reginbald had consecrated the already completed crypt and buried the deceased in Utrecht already on 4 June Domgründer, Emperor Conrad II, the unfinished Cathedral on July 3, 1039. The Emperor's grave was at the end of the center aisle, the nave, in front of the crypt a place of honor as it deserved the Domgründer. Bishop Reginbald died only shortly after, in October 1039 and got the second place of honor in the center aisle, directly in front of the coffin of the Emperor. He was worshiped as the blessed Bishop of Speyer Reginbald, his grave was a well visited place of pilgrimage. The stone coffin lid, which is now attached to the wall, the side of the entrance to the baptistery is likely the Bishop Reginbald.

Worship

He is considered a pious and studious, died in the odor of sanctity, and was especially praised because of his charity for the poor. Reginbalds worship continued unabated at least until the Reformation. Later he got a bit forgotten. Nevertheless, Magnus Jocham it devotes a large chapter in his Bavaria Sancta, in which he describes the famous Bavarian and Palatine Saints in the 19th century. Because of his devotion as Seliger Reginbald of Dillingen is also represented in the hagiographic field; either in episcopal robes, as he brings a chandelier for Marie altar ( in the Speyer Cathedral ), or sometimes as an abbot who receives the certificate of his appointment as bishop of the monastery.

His feast day is 13 October.

Since 1970, dedicated to the Blessed Reginbald at Speyer Cathedral, the bronze portal of Afra Chapel. It bears the Latin motto ( German translation ):

" Augsburg sent the abbot of St Afra to Speyer, that he may reign the Diocese: Reginbald it was; he saw that Dom grow up in his lofty beginnings. - His ashes rest in blessed peace "!
