Regina Resnik

Regina Resnik ( born August 30, 1922 in New York City; † August 8, 2013 ibid ) was an American opera singer (soprano, mezzo-soprano and alto).

Life

Originally from a Russian Jewish family Regina Resnik studied at Hunter College until 1942 and debuted on the New York Opera Company as Lady Macbeth, and a little later at the New York City Opera as Santuzza. In 1944 she made ​​her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, first as a soprano. 1953, she also sang a Wagnerian soprano role of Sieglinde in Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival under Clemens Krauss. As of 1956, she then appeared in old and mezzo soprano parts.

She was up in the 1970s internationally as a first choice for mezzo- soprano roles such as Carmen, Clytemnestra ( legendary recording with Birgit Nilsson, Head of Georg Solti ), Amneris, Miss Quickly and many others.

In 1971 she began directing opera, since 1983 she produced documentaries and music programs on Jewish themes for television and radio.

Regina Resniks voice was characterized by a special expressiveness and energy, and had a " steel ", which rivaled that of their Scandinavian colleagues Astrid Varnay Birgit Nilsson in or anything.

She was married since 1975 to his second wife with the Lithuanian painter Arbit Blatas ( 1908-1999 ). From her first marriage to the lawyer Harry Davis comes a son. She died the age of 90 on August 8, 2013 in New York.
