Reginald Gardiner

William Reginald Gardiner ( born February 27, 1903 in London, England; † July 7, 1980 in Westwood, California ) was a British actor.

Life and career

Reginald Gardiner was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1927 and gave his film debut with a small supporting role in Alfred Hitchcock's silent film The Tenant. From then on he worked regularly as a film actor, also he went to London theaters. There Gardiner could have greater success with his performances in musicals. Mid -1930s, the actor walked to the USA, where he first appeared in two plays on Broadway. He made ​​the jump to Hollywood, where he was a popular supporting actor soon.

With his pencil-thin mustache and his great stature he caricatured mainly all British butlers, aristocrats and officers. He joined in 1937, for example, in the movie musical A damsel in distress on the side of Fred Astaire on. Two years later he formed the counterpart to Laurel and Hardy in the military comedy in the Foreign Legion. He had his most famous film role as commander of Schultz in Charlie Chaplin 's famous Hitler parody The Great Dictator in 1940. Until the late 1960s, Gardiner performed regularly in Hollywood films and also had some television appearances.

He became known in the 1950s for his imitations and lectures on trains in the British children's program.
