Reginald Owen

John Reginald Owen ( * August 5, 1887 in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, England; † November 5, 1972 in Boise, Idaho, United States) was a British actor.

Life

Owen was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his debut in 1905 with 18 years on the stage. In 1920 he moved to New York, where he played from 1925 on Broadway. Four years later he moved to Hollywood to work as a film actor. 1929 saw him in The Letter, among others, along with actors like Jeanne Eagels, OP Heggie and Herbert Marshall. Owen became famous in the 1930s by the role of Doctor Watson, whom he played in several Sherlock Holmes films. From then on, Owen has appeared in many productions for film and television. He also starred in several films by director Edwin L. Marin. He worked mostly for MGM. In his later years he again drew attention to himself by films from Walt Disney and appearances in the series Maverick. He played in Mary Poppins the " Admiral Boom". Also in 1972, year of his death, he was playing once again on the stage in the play A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with Phil Silvers.

Reginald Owen was married three times: First marriage to actress Lydia Bilbrook (1888-1990), with whom he had two children. His second wife, he married stage actress Harold Austin. By the end of his life he was married to Barbara Haveman. He died on November 5, 1972 of a heart attack. At this time he had written in his autobiography.

Owen had no fixed voice actor. He was spoken of among other things, Paul Wagner and Walther Süssenguth.
