Reginar, Duke of Lorraine

Reginhar, also called Reginar I., (* 850, † between August 25, 915 and 19 January 916 in Meerssen ) was a leading Frankish Big Lotharingia in the northern ( Lower Lorraine ) in the 9th and 10th centuries. He is the founder of the clan of Reginare.

His family origin is not documented, although it is generally regarded as the son of Maasgaugrafen Giselbert and a daughter of Emperor Lothar I accepted. Alternatively, however, a Reginar is drawn as a father in consideration, which is called 864-870 as lay abbot of Echternach and was identical with that comes Reginar presumably, was 876 killed at the Battle of Andernach. Reginar I. is referred to in a list of Laienäbte of Echternach as " junior".

Already in medieval chronicles Reginar I the epithet " long neck" ( Collo longus, Longum - collum ) is added, probably by mistake in confusion with his grandson Reginar III. , Which this epithet has been awarded earlier.

Life

Reginar in the capitularies the Bald 877 issued by the West Frankish king Charles in Quierzy occurs already documented in appearance, including the Maasgaugrafen Giselbert, who was probably his father. Together with Bishop Franco of Liege, he was the king around the year 880 deployed in the northern Lotharingien to successfully fight the Normans under Gottfried. Pact together with Count Baldwin II of Flanders and his brother Rodulfus Reginar 895 against King Charles III. with the Simple King of Lotharingia Zwentibold. But even 898, he broke with Zwentibold from which he received a twelve- day period to exit Lotharingiens, and returned in the entourage of Charles III. of the Simple back. This he advised an attack on the kingdom of Lotharingia.

Reginar had built up during his time in Lotharingia a regional power base, get over his death 900 also remained to him, despite the reference of King Zwentibold. Since 897, he served as lay abbot of Echternach, later he also brought of Stavelot and Malmedy in itself. To what extent he was entrusted with the office of a count ( comes ) can not be inferred from contemporary chronicles, only from the 11th century to him the Maasgau and Hesbaye be attributed. Suppose also that Reginar had already occupied Hainaut, before he was expelled and replaced by 898 of the country Sigehard. In a document dated July 21, 905 he called himself dux. After the death of the East Frankish king Louis the Child ( † 911) had the lotharingische nobility, including Reginar, his successor Conrad I refused to follow and turned to the West Frankish Regnum instead. Meanwhile, King Charles III. the Fool had the outstanding position of power Reginars recognized in Lotharingia, which is why he thus in royal documents as missus dominicus, demarcus and marchio occurred.

Reginar is the last time mentioned in a document of King Charles the Simple of 25 August 915. His two sons Giselbert and Reginar II called on January 19, 916 at the side of the king in Herstal, Reginar itself should already deceased at this time. In the list of Laienäbte of Echternach he is led to 915. His place of death was Meerssen.

He married Alberada whose origin is unclear, with whom he had at least three children:

  • Giselbert († 939), Duke of Lorraine
  • Reginar II († 931), Count of Hainaut
  • N.N. daughter; ∞ with Berengar, Count of Lommegau and in May Field

Another marriage Reginhars

Heinz racing expressed the belief that Reginhar was already married before his marriage to Alberada with Ermentrud, the daughter of King Louis the Stammerer, and that Cunegonde, daughter Ermentruds, come from just this marriage. He bases his assumption with the fact that among the offspring Kunigunde the names Reginhar and Giselbert can be found. Eduard Hlawitschka closes considers Renn, but points out that in this case - the widely recognized, but not occupied descent Reginhars provided - a marriage between cousin and cousin second degrees vorliege: Reginhar and Ermentrud have with Louis the Pious the same great-grandfather, but with whose wives Ermengarde ( for Reginhar ) and Judith different ( for Ermentrud ) great-grandmothers. Hlawitschka sees a too close relationship between Reginhar and Ermengard as an impediment to marriage and concludes that Reginhars mother the daughter of Emperor Lothair, but a second wife of his father Giselbert was not ( see main article Giselbert of Maasgau ) that for Reginhar so no descent from was given the Carolingians.
