The Registro Italiano Navale ( RINA ) is a ship classification society based in Genoa.

History

RINA was founded in 1861 in Genoa under the name Registro Italiano as a private foundation of local shipping companies and ship owners to end the dependence on foreign classification societies and to reduce insurance costs. The Italian State recognized the Registro Italiano 1870 as a nonprofit organization and permitted from 1881, the takeover of government functions. In 1910 it merged with the Registro Nazionale and renamed the Registro Nazionale Italiano, after the First World War, in Registro Italiano Navale. 1919 wrote one important cooperation agreement with the British Corporation Register of Shipping and Aircraft, the American Bureau of Shipping and the Japanese Teikoku Kaiji Kyokai. 1921 was the acquisition of Veritas Adriatico and the relocation of the official corporate headquarters to Rome.
