Rhine Bridge and Castle Reichenau

Reichenau is a place in the political community Tamins in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The building complex, dominated by the castle Reichenau hamlet lies at the confluence of the front and rear Rhine. Beyond the Rhine, on the municipality Domat / Ems, is the railway station Reichenau- Tamins the Rhaetian Railway.

History

The locality is named after the monastery of Reichenau, the since the Carolingian period possessed goods here.

In the 14th century, long-distance travel over the Graubunden mountain passes increased significantly, two bridges and a customs house. Until then, the coming of Churchill Road said in Domat / Ems: a branch led south through the rocky outcroppings of Crap taglieu at the back along the Rhine Domleschg and on to Spliigen and Bernhardinpass, the other and over the Rhine bridge Punt arsa to the village Tamins further west to the Lukmanier and Oberalp. The traffic boom now let it seem worthwhile, not to build bridges as before on the structural engineering, but at the most strategic place - just in Reichenau, where all traffic could be controlled. One of the new bridges led directly at the confluence of the Rhine on the front, the other about 300 meters below on the combined Rhine. In between was the customs office.

More buildings were constructed after 1616, when the villages of the Court Hohentrins had the feudal rights replaced by cash payment and the Lords of Schauenstein moved the center of their rule to Reichenau. The current building stock of the castle dates back to alterations made in 1775 and 1820. In 1792, Johann Rudolf Graf sold Buol -looking stone, the brother of the prince-bishop and father of the Austrian statesman Karl Ferdinand von Buol -looking stone, Reichenau to Messrs. Simeon Bavier, GA Vieli and Johann Baptist Tscharner. Tscharner moved his hitherto housed in Jenin educational institution of philanthropy in the rooms of the castle. Director of this institute was Johann Peter Nesemann from Magdeburg. A new impetus was given the school by Heinrich Zschokke, a German, also from Magdeburg. The reformatory existed until 1798. Looked at this also from November 1793 until June 1794 as a teacher and the volatile young Duke of Chartres, later to become " citizen king " Louis Philippe. As Monsieur Chabos he gave French and mathematics. Under the protection of the then manager of the castle, Alois von Jost, a former officer of the Swiss Guard in Paris, he had come here.

In Reichenau Castle after the closure of the Institute of French ambassador Guyot took his seat, he and Zschokke represented from here the so-called party of " patriots", the opponents of the Salis and Austria, which supported the Grisons connection to Switzerland. 1799 attacked Oberlander farmers to a post of 900 Frenchmen, who defended the bridge of Reichenau with gun. Until 1812, then a mining company trying to use the gold production. The castle is still one of the family of Tscharner, which operates in the area of Chur viticulture. Today, some outbuildings serve as a hotel.

End of the 19th century the two road bridges were rebuilt as iron constructions, one of which has been preserved until today, the other was in the 1960s, replaced by a concrete bridge. The two bridges of the Rhaetian Railway (1896 and 1903 ) and the Rhine crossing the A13 continue the tradition continues as Reichenau to bridges and transportation hub.
