The Reichenbach Falls Railway is a Swiss funicular.

Location

The valley station of the Reichenbach Falls track is located in Schattenhalb near Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland 600 m above sea level and leads up to the Reichenbach Falls to 844 m above sea level, which has become famous through the created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character Sherlock Holmes.

History

On July 1, 1896, the Federal Council granted the concession for a narrow-gauge funicular railway up to the Reichenbach Falls and in the same year began the company by Bucher & Durrer the construction work. On June 8, in 1899 the official opening of the 23 operating funicular in Switzerland. From the beginning, she associated with electric drive. Already started quickly but the financial problems and on February 20, 1903, the Federal Court decreed the forced liquidation. In December 1904, the auction of the railway took place. The new operators remained luckless and 1907, the web went bankrupt again. The railway survived this setback and found a new owner.

In winter 1930/31 you drive has been completely renovated and in 1957/58 was the automation of control and you could henceforth do without the machinists in the drive center, which brought some savings. Between 1998 and 2004 the train for the next 100 years was made ​​fit and the Reichenbach Falls train shines again with their new, reconstructed wooden car with the original chassis, the rehabilitated line and its bridges, and with the new, modern control of the drive.
