Reiderland

Reider country ( listen? / I ) is a district of the municipality in the Dutch province of Groningen Oldambt. Until the merger with Scheemda and Winschoten on 1 January 2010 for new community Oldambt Reider country was an independent municipality, which is about 7,000 inhabitants (as of 2008 ) and an area of ​​149.70 km ² had. Location and economic

Reider country located in the extreme northeast of the province of Groningen and borders ( at the same time the state border ), located in the region Rheiderland at the Dollard, and at Bunde in East Frisia, Lower Saxony. The Dutch A7 motorway ends in Bad Nieuweschans and runs across the border in Germany as a federal highway 280 on. History

Until the 15th century, the area was an essentially uninhabited fen, which was also from time to time flooded by the sea. In 1628 was Ernst Casimir of Nassau- Dietz, the then ruler of the region, a border fortress ( Nieuweschans, Neuschanz ) on the new road Groningen - Create Bremen on East Frisian ground. Around 1970 an underground spring was discovered with medicated water at Nieuweschans.
