Reima Salonen

Reima Salonen ( Reima Untamo Salonen, born November 19, 1955 in Taivassalo ) is a former Finnish skiers.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, 50km Walk was canceled once from the program. Instead, was a world championship in Malmo instead of just for the long haul touring. It won the Russian Veniamin Soldatenko before the Mexicans Enrique Vera. Third was the 20-year old Reima Salonen in 3:58,53 h

Four years later, Salonen was 50 km at the 1980 Olympic Games in the 20 km walk ninth in 1:31:32 h over he gave up. At the European Championships in 1982 in Athens Salonen was about 20 km in 1:28:04 with eight hours while the Spaniard José Marín won. Over 50 km, three days later, was Marín second behind Reima Salonen, who was in 3:55:29 h European champions.

At the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki Salonen was one of the few local medal contenders. About 20 km, he finished in 1:22:51 h but only the twelfth. Five days later, the 50 km competition took place in the pouring rain, it won Ronald Weigel from the GDR before José Marín. With almost six minutes behind came to the Soviet Union Sergei Jung in third place. Nearly four more minutes passed before Reima Salonen fourth after 3:52:53 hours crossed the finish line, just before the Mexican Raúl González.

Even in his second 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles did not succeed Salonen to win a medal. After he was 3:58:30 h again fourth with ten minutes behind the Olympic champion González. Also at the European Championships 1986 in Stuttgart, he missed a medal when he finished 5th after 3:46:14 hours. About 20 km he was disqualified; it was only the second disqualification in his long career.

At the 1987 World Championships in Rome, he was about 20 km to 1:24:14 h Tenth and gave over 50 km along. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he was ranked 42 by 20 km ( 1:28:25 h) and 18th place 50 km ( 3:51:36 h).

Salonen was Finnish Champion about 20 km from 1973 to 1983 and from 1985 until 1987. Than 50 km, it won in the years 1974, 1975, 1977-1979, 1981, 1982 and 1984 to 1987 the title.

After more than 15 years in which Salonen was the best Finnish skiers, he finished his career. He was succeeded by Valentin Kononen.

Reima Salonen is 1,77 m tall and weighed in his playing days 70 kg.
