Reinhard Selten

Reinhard Justus Reginald Selten ( born October 5, 1930 in Breslau) is a German economist and mathematician. In 1994, he received so far the only German with John Forbes Nash and John Harsanyi the Nobel Prize in economics for joint work in the field of game theory.

Life

Reinhard Selten passed his Abitur at the Scholl -Gymnasium in Melsungen with distinction.

Rarely studied mathematics at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and in 1961 received his doctorate there in mathematics. He was a visiting professor at Berkeley and taught from 1969 to 1972 at the Free University of Berlin and from 1972 to 1984 at the University of Bielefeld. He then took up an appointment at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. There he built the BonnEconLab, a laboratory for experimental economics, to which he has been active even after his retirement.

Since 2006, he leads a project of the North Rhine- Westphalian Academy Academy of Sciences and Arts, entitled rationality in the light of experimental economics.

Rarely is married and lives in King Winter Ittenbach.

Work

Rarely developed in 1965 the concept of subgame perfect equilibrium and in 1975 the concept of trembling -hand- perfect equilibrium. In 1994 he was awarded for his contribution in the game theory of the Nobel Prize in Economics, along with John Harsanyi and John Forbes Nash Jr. He is also known for his work in the field of bounded rationality (see for example the so-called claim adjustment theory Sauermann and rare and concept of imitation equilibrium of Ostermann and rare ), and it is one of the founders of experimental economics.

Reinhard Selten is a member of the Econometric Society and the European Economic Association (EEA ), the long-time president he was. He is an honorary member of the American Economic Association ( AEA). He is also a regular member of the North Rhine- Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts, an Associate Member of the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and nonresident honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a founding member of the " International Academy of Sciences San Marino ." Rarely speaks, as his wife, since his youth Esperanto; He has written several works in Esperanto and published, among other things, on the application of game theory to the problem of choosing an international language. Rarely was a candidate in the European elections in 2009 as a German top candidate for the list Europe - Democracy - Esperanto ( EDE ).

His students include many economists and researchers as Bernd Irlenbusch, Axel Ockenfels, Christian Rieck, Bettina Rockenbach, Abdulkarim Sadrieh, Benny Moldovanu and Rosemarie Nagel.
