Reinheimen-Nationalpark

Reinheimen National Park (Norwegian Reinheimen nasjonalpark ) is a 1974 km ² large Norwegian National Park in Reinheimen Mountains. He belongs to the municipalities Rauma, Norddal in the province of Møre og Romsdal and Lom, Lom, Skjåk and Lesya in the province of Oppland. The national park was founded in 2006, by which the large, contiguous wilderness, the high mountain ecosystem, with its distinctive biological diversity, protecting the great mountain reindeer herds and cultural heritage, and also, among others, the area in terms of geology, climate, vegetation and even better to explore topography.

At the park borders the nature reserves Finndalen, Ottadalen, Lordalen, Romsdal, Trollstigen, Tafjord - Reindalen and Brettingsmoen nature reserve.

History

Back in 1975 recommended that the Norwegian " fjellopsynsmann " (about "Mountain Guardian " ) and nature photographer Olaf Heitkøtter be protected by a large nature reserve in the mountainous regions between Lesya, Trollstigen and Ottadalen the area, to protect them against exploitation and destruction by hydroelectric power plants. In 1993, the site has been designated as a nature reserve.

1986 one was already thinking, make the area a national park, as this was one of the most pristine regions in southern Norway, which is worth protecting, especially in terms of their geology, flora, fauna and cultural history.

In 2006, then finally the Reinheimen National Park was opened.

Geography, landscape and geology

The park has a varied landscape which leads from the fjords on the Norwegian Sea over 2,000 meters high mountains, valleys and pastures until Gudbrandsdalen. In the northwest of the park lies the Tafjordfjella Mountains, whose highest peak is 1,982 m high Karitinden. In the center of the park is the 2,014 moh. high Gråhøe. Southeast of the park are the Ottadalen and 1883 moh high Skartind.

The park in the main rock is gneiss. The landscape was formed during and after the last Ice Age through the movements of glaciers.

Flora and Fauna

The soils in the park are usually very infertile, only to Slådalsvegen the soils are rich in lime, what it leads to a lush vegetation.

The largest mammals in the park are the Bergren. In addition, there are still large stocks of Alpine and grouse moor and also rare and endangered species such as the wolverine, the golden eagle and gyrfalcon.

Heritage

In Reinheimen National Park were found relics of prehistoric to medieval reindeer hunting and various remains of mountain farms from centuries past.

Tourism and Management

The Norwegian Trekking Association maintains several huts and paths in Tafjordfjella. In the other areas of the park there is almost no infrastructure.
