Red-brown Reinwardt Dove ( Reinwardtoena reinwardtsi )

The long-tailed Pigeon ( Reinwardtoena ) are a genus of pigeons birds. The genus is found only in Southeast Asia and comprises only three species. Kinship they are close to the cuckoo doves and count how this subfamily Columbinae. The genus is named after the German scientist Georg Caspar Carl Reinwardt.

Appearance

Long-tailed Pigeons are medium to large birds, pigeons and reach a body length between 40 and 50 centimeters. In all three species the tail in proportion to body size in length and the plumage color is strongly contrasted. In the red-brown Reinwardt dove for example, the top is maroon, the head and the neck are light gray. In the Black Reinwardt dove and Solomon Islands crested pigeon, the body top is black, face and chest on the other hand almost white ( Black Reinwardt dove ), or silvery blue-gray to reddish light gray.

All three species have thicker and larger beaks compared to the cuckoo doves. This is particularly pronounced in the Solomon Islands crested pigeon. In this type of bill is thicker than in the other two species, also the upper beak at the tip is with her hook-shaped bent downward. The Salomon pigeon differs in appearance from some of the other two species and was placed in a separate genus Coryphoenas until well into the 1960s. Their head and neck feathers are greatly elongated and the same as the lad who pointed Crested Pigeon ( Ocyphaps lophotes ).

Distribution and habitat

Long-tailed Pigeons are native to the Solomon Islands, Maluku, New Britain and New Guinea and neighboring islands. There are waldbewohnende species. The Red-brown Reinwardt dove occurs in mountain forests up to 3,500 meters above sea level. The Solomon Islands crested pigeon inhabited hill forests. About the applications used by the Black Reinwardt pigeon habitats, however, is virtually unknown.

Behavior

Like most wild pigeons are the long-tailed pigeons inhabiting soil. From the red-brown Reinwardt dove only nests in caves or on rocky outcrops are known to date. For the other two species lack of reliable field observations.
