The aboveground Reka

The Reka (Slovenian for "river" ) is a river in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, which flows 54 km above ground and about 35 km underground and created a huge cave system in the karst of Slovenia has (UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Škocjan Caves ).

The Reka rises in Croatia near the border with Slovenia at an altitude of 720 m and flows in a northwesterly direction through the villages of Bistrica Illirska, Topolc and Prem to Škocjan. There she sinks into shrinkage and flows over waterfalls and gorges through the Škocjan Caves. At a depth of 160 m, it disappears into an underground lake. The further underground development is largely unknown.

33 km from the river Schwinde Reka rises near San Giovanni di Duino ( Prov. Trieste, Italy) the Timavo as powerful karst spring and opens after two kilometers in the port of Monfalcone channel into the sea.
