Reken is a municipality in Western Munsterland of northwestern North Rhine- Westphalia and belongs to the district of Borken in the governmental district of Münster. Geographical Location

Reken is located in Westmünsterland in the Hohe Mark Nature Park - Westmünsterland between the mountain ranges Rekener mountains in the north, the mountains in the northwest and High Mark in the East, in particular the latter is rich in forests. History

Reken was first mentioned in the year 889.

In the 9th and 10th centuries was called today Reken Regnum, mentioned in Werden register. The 1173 first mentioned in the main courtyard " Rekene " came into the possession of the Münster cathedral chapter in the 11th or beginning of the 12th century.

1467 Reken was one of three Bailiwick districts, which were established in the area.

The Waldemar Mallek originally designed and used later further coat of arms for the former town of Gross Reken shows the two naves of large Rekener fortified church under a sprig of holly, a typical local shrub.

Structures

Two miles to the north of Greater Reken is located within a woodland area of the Hohe Mark Nature Park - Westmünsterland the " Hermitage ", a local pilgrimage site. The " Hermitage " is a Catholic chapel with an attached dwelling house. The first chapel was first mentioned in 1742 in connection with a healing source in the area. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and provided space for a total of five people. Over time, it has continuously been expanded and remodeled. Until 1879 lived in the house a hermit, from this time inhabits a family's estate. In 1986 the chapel was thoroughly renovated, since the chapel by a growing number of pilgrims visited.

The station located in the district Reken and not previously used railway station ( the station was only set up a ticket machine ) was renovated in 2005/2006 from the ground up. Reken has two railway stations on the railway line Duisburg- Quakenbruck: Reken Station and Maria Veen.
