Relative articulation
In linguistics is centralization (also: weakening, vowel weakening, vowel weakening, Vokalverdumpfung ) for the displacement of the position of the tongue in the articulation of vowels in the central portion toward the central vowel [ ə ] ( schwa ).
Examples
- The unstressed vowels in English
- The unstressed e in final syllables dt
Vowel weakening in internal syllables (also called " single vowel weakening " )
Under vowel weakening in internal syllables is the reforming of a strong vowel when attaching a prefix to a weaker such.
Examples
Very often takes the internal vowel weakening on in Latin. So here examples from Latin:
- From " facere " ( make, do ) and "ad" (there, in addition to ... towards ) is (meaning " add " ) " afficere ". From the strong "a " to " facere " a "i".
- Just is from " capere " ( take hold ) - by attaching the prefix "ad" - " accipere " (an- taking, record ).
