Reliance Building

The Reliance Building is a skyscraper in the U.S. city of Chicago and was the first skyscraper, whose facade was mostly covered with glass.

Architecture

The building was constructed in two phases. The ground floor and the first floor were designed by John Wellborn Root. The floors above were executed by Charles B. Atwood, who succeeded the late 1891 " John Root " in the architectural firm of Daniel Hudson Burnham. The change can be seen in architecture. The basement is dressed without ornaments and dark, while the facade of the 13 office floors is open and transparent. Atwood uses the so-called window Chicago, wherein a large glass sheet is put on the front plane, while two small discs can be opened at the sides.

Conservation

The Reliance Building is protected since 1970 by an entry in the National Register of Historic Places since 1976 and as a National Historic Landmark. 1995 was additionally included in the Chicago Landmark category.
