Religious name

The Order is the name when entering a religious community ( religious community ) adopted name that takes the place of the civil name in the Order. In most communities, this name was traditionally awarded by the High when taking the novitiate ( the garment ). Today it is often gone over, that the novice is allowed to choose a name or make several proposals under which the Upper then selects. It is also possible to choose the Christian name as a religious name.

Since the Early Modern Period the award of religious name is a common practice. The new name is meant to express that the Order members of God is called in a special way. The medal thereby appointed to, among other Isa. 62.2 to 4 EU: " They call you by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord for you." Was chosen mostly a Holy Name, where the eponymous saint then as a personal patron saint was called. In some orders, such as the Discalced Carmelites, the Order also contains a predicate name - such as " the Holy Face " - which expresses a special relationship with the wearer's name to this mystery of faith.

For example, Mother Teresa, whose real name was Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhi; she chose the name Therese of Lisieux as a saint. Other examples of members of religious orders, which are known only by their religious name: Thomas Cajetan, Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Konrad von Parzham.

According to today's German name right religious name are like artist name and other pseudonyms no real name. By November 2007, however, they could be entered in the identity card and passport. With effect from 1 November 2010, the Order name can be re- registered in the identity card.

Hinduism, Buddhism

A spiritual name or monk name is a name that one, in addition to the usual name receives in the course of initiation. Particularly widespread this practice is in Hinduism and Buddhism, here are these names often in Sanskrit ( Mahayana, Vajrayana ) or Pali ( Theravada ).
