Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film: Dramatic sketches from the life of Dutch painter. Atmospheric and photographed by Charles Laughton with captivating vitality played historical milieu and character study.
  • Reclams Movie Guide: Korda tried here ... apparently the great success of his film "The private life of Henry VIII " to repeat. This did not succeed completely, probably because he had to give up the ironic distance and the usual Schauspielergepränge here. But a prestige success was the carefully staged movie yet. It is interesting to attempt to apply the technique of the painter Rembrandt on the image design of the film.
