Renata Scotto
Renata Scotto ( born February 24, 1934 in Savona) is an Italian opera singer (soprano) and opera director. It is considered as most important Italian soprano Renata Tebaldi next Mirella Freni and in the second half of the 20th century.
Life and work
Scotto studied with the well-known Spanish singer and singing teacher Mercedes Llopart. After her vocal studies in Milan Scotto made her debut as Violetta Valéry in 1954 in La Traviata at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan. Shortly after her first appearance at the Teatro alla Scala followed as Walter in La Wally with Renata Tebaldi and Mario del Monaco.
1960 debuted in America Scotto as Mimi in La Bohème at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. This was followed by Cio-Cio- San in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Colón in 1964 and 1965 at the New York Metropolitan Opera.
While Scotto in previous years focused more on the repertoire of bel canto ( she jumped in 1957 in Edinburgh successfully for Maria Callas as Amina in Bellini's La sonnambula a ) applied it in their later career years, especially the dramatic roles of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini to. One of her best roles was the Madama Butterfly, which she immortalized in two famous recordings (1966 under Sir John Barbirolli and 1978 under Lorin Maazel ). She is considered one of the best interpreters of this role.

She went in her career, a more risk and also did not hesitate - Maria Callas - to go in favor of the musical and dramatic expression of the possibilities of her voice.

Renata Scotto is married since 1960 with the Italian violinist Lorenzo Anselmi, with whom she has two children, a son Filippo Anselmi (born 1972) and daughter Laura S. Anselmi (b. 1969).
