Renate Jaeger

Life

Jaeger studied law at the University of Cologne, Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich and University of Lausanne. After the second state exam, she joined in 1968 the Ministry of Justice of North Rhine -Westphalia and was until 1974 a judge at the Social Court Dusseldorf, from where she was seconded for the years 1970 and 1971 as a research assistant to the Federal Social Court. 1974 Jaeger was appointed Judge of the Higher Social Court, where she worked until 1987. In the years 1976 to 1979, she was seconded as a research assistant at the Federal Constitutional Court. In 1986, she was appointed presiding Judge at the Social Court, in 1987, he was appointed a Judge of the Federal Social Court.

Besides her work at the Federal Social Court, she was elected in 1988 as a member of the Constitutional Court of the State of North Rhine -Westphalia, 1992, she was also a member of the Constitutional Commission of Inquiry Rhineland- Palatinate. From 1991 to 1994 she also took a teaching position at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.

On March 24 In 1994 Jaeger was appointed a judge of the Constitutional Court, where she was a member of the First Senate in 2004 to 29 October. She was also a liaison officer of the Federal Constitutional Court on the Venice Commission - Council of Europe.

On 28 April 2004 Jaeger was elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council to judge at the European Court of Human Rights. Before taking up this judicial office on 1 November 2004, she was awarded on 14 October 2004 by the Law Faculty of the University of Münster with an honorary doctorate. In the fall of her the Grand Cross of Merit was awarded with Star and Sash of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Renate Jaeger is a member of the board of Germany's Relief eV, the alliance of charities.

Since January 12, 2011 Jaeger is chairman of the Board of the European Commission. Since the beginning of 2011, she also directs the arbitration body of the legal profession, which mediates disputes between clients and attorneys.
