René Goulaine de Laudonnière

René Goulaine de Laudonniere (* 1542 in Poitou, † 1582 ) was a French novelist and colonizer.

Life

Laudonniere was born in Poitou, was a Huguenot Jean Ribault in 1562 and accompanied on his first French expedition Florida. 1564 came Laudonniere as commander of a second expedition again to Florida and built on the south bank of the St. Johns River Fort Caroline. The base was attacked by Indians, and the settlers were about to mutiny, as Sir John Hawkins and passed Laudonniere food and a ship sold ( 1565). Shortly after, Ribault came to Florida; he brought with him the command for Laudonniere to return to France, to defend themselves against various allegations. Before Laudonniere could leave, the settlement was attacked and destroyed by the Spaniards under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Laudonniere got one of the few who escaped the massacre, 1566 France.
