René-Louis Baire

René Louis Baire ( born January 21, 1874 in Paris, † July 5, 1932 in Chambéry ) was a French mathematician. Baire is considered one of the founders of the modern theory of real functions. In particular, he is known for the set of Baire category.

He studied at the École normale supérieure and was then a high school teacher in Troyes, Bar-le- Duc and Nancy. In 1899 he received his doctorate in 1902 and professor in Montpellier and in 1905 Professor of Analysis in Dijon. Baire was sick since his youth and finally had to give up his job ( both research and teaching). In 1914 he went to Lausanne to cure and had to spend the first world war there. 1932 committed suicide Baire.
