Repentance (Georgian: მონანიება, Monanieba ) is a feature film by the Georgian director Tengiz Abuladze. He was shot in 1984 and first performed in 1987.

Content

Monanieba figured allegorically but uncompromising off with Stalinism. The director called him the " first swallow of perestroika ." He is by the late dictator Varlam which is excavated by a woman. It appears in the Court that the woman Warlams will illuminate past crimes. Varlam looks in flashback as Stalin's state security chief Beria Lawrenti, wearing a Hitler mustache and a fascist black shirt. The film was banned until 1986 in the Soviet Union. Finally, at the instigation of the former Georgian Communist Party chief Eduard Shevardnadze, he could be performed and drove the changes in the Soviet Union ahead.

The film is also used those of Arvo Pärt alongside the music of Nana Dschanelidse.

Background

In many socialist countries, the film was banned. After the German premiere on ZDF in October 1987, the GDR began a press campaign against the film, which began with a scathing review by Hans -Dieter Schütt on 28 October 1987.

Awards

1987 won Monanieba the most important film award of the Soviet Union, Nika, the Grand Jury Prize at the International Film Festival in Cannes in 1987 and was nominated for best foreign film Oscar. Overall, the film was awarded ten prizes.
