Representation (arts)

With representation (from Latin repraesentare, visualize ' ) is called in philosophy the realization of not immediately given in the imagination. Neuro Scientific representations are understood as mental states. For information on names of representations and expressions such as, presentation ',' representation 'or' image ' can be used. They are particularly subject of epistemology, philosophy of mind and philosophy of neuroscience.

In the philosophy of antiquity to the early modern period an image ratio was mainly adopted between the objects and their mental representations. In contrast, we find in Thomas Hobbes already theorized that mental representations are to be regarded as a language- like symbol pattern. The basic idea of the similarity between representation and the represented object has been discarded by semiotic reflections on the representation of a process or object by Charles Sanders Peirce as well as more recently by Nelson Goodman.
