Republic of the Congo parliamentary election, 2012

The parliamentary elections in the Republic of Congo in 2012 took place in the Central African Republic Congo on 15 July and 5 August 2012. Through these elections, the seats have been determined in the National Assembly of the Republic of Congo. Officially won already been ruling party Parti Congolais du Travail of the acting for over 30 years President Denis Sassou Nguesso more than 2/3 of the seats. Although 30 observers from the African Union were present, go international observers and opposition believes that the results are not very meaningful and based on massive fraud.

Electoral system

It was intended that the 139 seats of the National Assembly shall be determined in just as many electoral districts according to the majority vote. In electoral districts where no candidate in the first round received the majority of votes, a second round was conducted in which the candidate or the candidate with the most votes won the seat. Candidates had at least 25 years old, be a citizen of the Republic of Congo as well as free of a criminal record. Of the 1213 candidates were 124 women and 1089 men. In three districts of the capital Brazzaville accounted for the elections, since there immediately before an explosion occurred, which cost 300 lives. According to 3 seats remained vacant. Later on, a court acquitted the previous Parliament representatives of the three districts have the right to extend their term of office to the new legislature.

Official results

Officially, the government could party Parti Congolais du Travail more than double the number of their seats and so ten times as many seats gain as the largest opposition party Mouvement Congolais pour la Démocratie et le Développement Integral.
