Republican Federation

The Fédération Republicaine (German: Republican Association ) was a conservative French party of the Third Republic. They existed between 1903 and 1940. Most important competitive party was the centrist Alliance démocratique.

History

The Fédération Républicaine was formed in November 1903 as a right, but moderate and Republican Party. Its members rejected the coalition of Parti républicain (Republican, liberal radical ) and the Bloc of Gauches ( Left Block) by Pierre Waldeck -Rousseau from. Some of them were frustrated over the course of the Dreyfus affair, and even refused the pardon of the Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus. The ideological role models were, among others, Félix Jules Méline, Alexandre Ribot, Jean Casimir - Perier and Charles Dupuy. They represented the interests of the upper layers and the economic, social reforms were therefore hostile to. In addition, they were for decentralization. The members were generally members of the elite. In 1926 the party had 30,000 members, in 1939 there were 18,000.

In the elections in 1919 the party participated on the list of the National Bloc. In the same year, the group merged with the Catholic Action Party libérale together. The group was named the Entente républicaine démocratique. Due to interference of anti - parliamentary groups and change at the leadership level, the party always oriented to the right. In the following years, however, the members were more opportunities for participation, youth organizations emerged. When the party entered into a coalition with the Alliance démocratique center, called for a majority of the members of the association with all the right parties. This happened when the left-wing parties, the Popular Front formed. After the shift to the right, many important members left the party.

Although few members actively participated in the Vichy regime, it was accepted by a large part. Nevertheless, the party was a member of the Conseil national de la Résistance. Due to their indifferent attitude during the war, the party could not re-establish after the liberation in 1944. As the successor party is the Centre national des Independants et paysans.
