Republican Party of Albania

The Albanian Republican Party (acronym: PR or PRSH; Albanian partia Republikane Shqiptare ) is a right-wing political party in Albania. Since the parliamentary elections of March 1992, the PR is always represented by at least one deputy in Kuvendi i Shqipërisë. Since 2013, it is in opposition. Fatmir Mediu is party chairman.

History

The Albanian Republican Party was founded in January 1991 under the leadership of the writer Sabri Godo ( 1929-2011 ), who also was its first chairman. After the Democratic Party, this was the second party's founding in Albania after the anti-communist revolution in the fall of 1990. As the name suggests, the Republicans chose the U.S. Republicans for their political role model. They arranged themselves as a right of center on the political spectrum.

After the parliamentary elections of March 1992, the first truly free elections in which the party had reached 3.8 % of the vote, she entered into a coalition with the Democrats. But when much smaller partner she could hardly help shape government policy. After the Democratic administration had been overthrown by the unrest of 1996/97, the PR went into opposition. Their only Sabri Godo deputy had worked in the aftermath intensively on the development of the new Albanian Constitution and the Constitutional Committee often mediates between the representatives of the rival Socialists and Democrats.

Before the elections of 2001, the PR joined the Alliance for the victory ( Alb. Bashkimi për Fitoren ) under the leadership of the Democrats. This connection of the right-wing parties should break the socialist majority and bring about the change of government. But this was not until 2005. In these elections, the PR could, not least because skillful strategic agreements with the Democrats, so far achieved their best result and moved with eleven deputies in parliament.

After the parliamentary elections of 2005, she joined the coalition government under a Democratic leadership and asked some members of the Cabinet. In the 2009 elections, she could gain only one seat, which you occupied since 1997 acting party leader Fatmir Mediu due to a change in the law to the detriment of the small parties ( restrictive clause ). Since 2013, it has four MPs in Parliament.
