Requiem (Cherubini)

The Requiem No. 1 in C minor for mixed chorus and orchestra in 1816 by the Italian composer Luigi Cherubini to the anniversary of the execution of Louis XVI. composed.

The premiere on January 21, 1817 was a great success, and the work was also admired in later decades by composers such as Brahms and Schumann. Ludwig van Beethoven, the Cherubini consequently dear, is that Requiem wished to have it performed at his own funeral. Striking is the lack of solo parts and the lack of high orchestral parts in the Introit and Kyrie.

The then Archbishop of Paris Hyacinthe -Louis de Quélen 1834 criticized the work, because it also requires women's voices, and forbade a performance at a funeral mass in Paris. In consequence of the exploiting dividend already at an advanced age Cherubini composed a second Requiem for male voices (see Requiem in D minor ( Cherubini ) ).
