Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre

The Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre ( RIPE NCC ) is a Regional Internet Registry (RIR ), responsible for the allocation of IP address ranges and AS numbers in Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia.

The organization was founded in 1992 in Amsterdam as a non-profit organization. Parent organizations are RIPE, which sets the guidelines for action for RIPE NCC, and ICANN for all questions about ranges of IP addresses and AS numbers.

For assignment of IPv4 addresses, ICANN has allocated to the RIPE NCC 39/8 networks (corresponding to a total of 39 224 = 654 311 424 IPv4 addresses ). For these areas of address blocks to Local Internet Registries (LIRs ) are assigned to, which in turn serve their end customers.

The organization lists on its website all available LIRs organized by country. A private individual, a company or other organization that needs IP addresses must refer to an LIR or RIPE member himself. RIPE NCC is funded by contributions from the affiliated members, most Internet service providers, universities and large companies in the IT industry.

In addition to the assignment of address blocks RIPE NCC is also responsible for the database that contains all assigned by RIPE NCC IP address ranges. About the accessible on the website Whois service anyone can determine who is assigned a specific address range. For each address range information such as owner, contact person and their postal addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers are stored there.

RIPE NCC is one of five Regional Internet Registries. In October 2003, was founded by these RIRs, the Number Resource Organization (NRO ), which is used for internal coordination and communication, and represents the interests of RIRs over ICANN.
