Reservoir

A reservoir (from the French A reservoir of réserve, "stock" ) generally stands for a ( large ) container, tank or reservoir for the storage of water or other fluids, with the aim to use these at a later date.

Technical reservoirs

Reservoirs are part of a water supply. In flat terrain they are mounted on distinctive towers (water tower), but everywhere, where it allows the topography, one water reservoirs built on hills surrounding settlements as (mostly) underground tanks. The area of a drinking water reservoir is considered water protection zone and therefore should be used as little as possible ( with respect to the use restrictions in different protection zones, see the article "Protected areas in the water environment "). A reforestation protects the drinking water in summer from excessive heat and reduces or eliminates beyond the addition of disinfectants ( chlorine) in drinking water.

Examples:

  • Precipitation reservoir
  • Drinking water reservoir
  • Fire water reservoir
  • Gasoline reservoir
  • Sperm reservoir (on the condom tip)
  • Lubricant reservoir for linear systems

Biological reservoirs

As a natural reservoir of those species are known in biology, for example, where viruses are propagated over long periods of time without the infected individuals show signs of illness. Such host animals are also called reservoir hosts. You can be the starting point for transitions of the pathogen to other species in which the infection then causes significant damage under certain circumstances. For details, please reservoir of pathogens.
