Resistencia, Chaco

Resistencia is the capital of the province of Chaco in the north-eastern Argentina. The city has today, together with its numerous suburbs about 350,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Resistencia is located on the west bank of a tributary of the Paraná River, directly opposite the city of Corrientes. The scenic area include the level of the Gran Chaco. The climate is subtropical, in summer it is very hot.

History

1876, the city was founded as a colony in the then sparsely populated Chaco National territory. Despite attacks by the Indians to Italian, German and Polish settlers settled shortly thereafter mainly here. 1885 Resistencia became the capital of the Chaco. But in 1914 began a constant phase of growth with the arrival of many immigrants from Europe, so the city has a modern image.

Religion

Resistencia is the seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese with the suffragan Formosa and San Roque de Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. The new archbishop, Pope Benedict XVI. November 17, 2005 Fabriciano Sigampa, who had previously been Bishop of La Rioja.

Economy and infrastructure

The city is both an industrial and commercial center as well as the administrative center of importance. The Port of Barranqueras is because of the lack of ocean-going suitability of the Paraná at this point only for river navigation is important.

Resistencia is the only city in Argentina, which has a system of commuter trains out of Buenos Aires. These are operated by the Province of Chaco dependent company SEFECHA.

Culture

In the second half of the 20th century, the installation of sculptures by renowned artists was promoted in the urban area, so that the town now almost like an open air museum and is nicknamed Ciudad de las Esculturas. Also of importance is the Craft, which is produced in the so-called Barrio Toba, Toba Indians inhabited by a quarter of a cooperative.
