Response time (technology)

Response time (English response time ) defined as the time between the sending of a message on the computer ( for example, by pressing the Enter key) and the receipt of the first character of the corresponding response at the terminal.

The response time is the sum of the data transmission rate in the transmission media and Internet components, the waiting time and the processing time of the message.

Factors influencing the response time may be, among others:

  • In the data transmission: network performance (efficiency) and network load
  • In waiting: backwater at high request rate
  • When processing time: power of computers and the database system, quality of database design and programming.

In addition to availability, the response time is an important indicator for assessing the usability of communication systems. Since the usability per se is not measurable, this criteria must be described, which can only apply to a specific application. They depend on the expectation of conformity of the user group.

The response time is a value in the calculation of the response ratio.
