Rest in peace

Rest in peace (Latin: Requiescat in pace; Italian: Riposi In Pace, English: Rest in peace; acronym RIP ) is a grave inscription commonly used.

Use

Frequently there is the Latin phrase on the front or back of death images. Use as a grave inscription dates back to the 7/8 Century. Previously used one grave inscriptions such as " obiit in pace" ( He / she died in peace ), " abiit in somnum Pacis" ( He / She went into the sleep of peace ), " depositus est in pace" ( He / she was at peace buried ), " Quiescit in pace" ( He / she rest in peace ) or " est apud Deum Acceptus " ( He / she was accepted by God ) together with the indication of the date of death.

The origin of the phrase " Rest in Peace " is usually Psalm 4, 9 Vulgate: specified " in pace in idipsum dormiam et requiescam ".

In the funeral liturgy of the Catholic Church, the phrase is also included:
