Restavec

As Restavec (also: restavek, from the French rester avec, meaning " stay with someone " ) are referred to child slaves in Haiti, who are employed in households.

Poor families (mainly from the country) give this their children, for whose maintenance they can not pay, to relatives or wealthier foreigners in the city, where the children light household chores do and they are promised in return food, shelter and sometimes education. In reality, however, many residual AVECS are being exploited and abused, and the promise of a good education, which is made the parents often, it often turns out to be wrong.

UNICEF estimates there are about 250,000 remaining AVECS in Haiti. Agencies strive to help the rest AVECS, by enabling them about to complete a modest training. Jean -Robert Cadet published his experiences as Restavec 1998, in his eponymous book.
