Rétaud
Rétaud is a southern French village with 1062 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Charente -Maritime in the Poitou -Charentes.
Location
The place is located in Saintonge about 12 km ( driving distance ) south-west of Saintes and about 32 kilometers east of the Gironde estuary at Royan. The neighboring village of Rioux with its architecturally very similar design, Notre Dame is just 5 miles south.
Demographics
Economy
For the surrounding rural communities Rétaud was in the Middle Ages as the central market and the artisan village of importance. Agriculture and viticulture are indispensable today from the economic life of the village. Since the 1980s, tourism has been added ( Rentals ) as a source of income.
History
About the history of Rétaud is virtually nothing known or published. In any case, the former priory of Saint - Trojan is likely to have played a significant role as a core for the emergence and development of the village.

- The ruins of the Château de Châtenet, a country estate or estate from the 14th and 15th centuries are listed buildings and are registered as a monument historique since 1942.
- The only single-storey ( plus mansard roof with dormer windows ) Manor of the Logis de Vallade was built in 1746 and recognized in 1992 as a monument historique. The building was later used as an orphanage.
