Retropharyngeal lymph nodes

The Retropharyngeallymphknoten ( lymph [ Lnn. ] Or lymph nodes [ lymph nodes ]. Retropharyngeal ) are a group of lymph nodes on the posterior wall of the pharynx before the first cervical vertebra. The catchment area ( tributary area ) are the oral cavity, including the tongue, the nasal cavity and the pharynx. The lymphatic drainage is via the deep cervical lymph nodes ( " internal jugular chain ").

In animal anatomy, the lymph nodes to a Lymphzentrum, the Lymphocentrum retropharyngeum are summarized. It is divided into two groups of lymph nodes:

  • The lymph retropharyngiales lateral ( " lateral retropharyngeal lymph nodes " ) are below the wing of the first cervical vertebra in the fossa retromandibular and be fully or partially covered by the parotid gland. In the horse, they lie on the lateral airbag bay. In dogs, they are often not formed.
  • The lymph retropharyngiales media ( " the middle lying retropharyngeal lymph nodes " ) are located on the back wall of the pharynx, the side of the musculus longus capitis, in horses on the wall of the medial airbag bay. The enlargement of the lymph nodes can cause difficulty swallowing.

The Lymphocentrum retropharyngeum serves as a way station for the lymph of the other lymph nodes and also collects the lymph from the low-lying structures of the head and near the head, neck muscles. From this Lymphzentrum the lymph flows either directly into the trunk trachealis, with horses on the front deep cervical lymph nodes indirectly, in the trunk or in swine trachealis a separate Lymphstamm in the Buglymphknoten.

In diagnostics, the Retropharyngeallymphknoten play a role in detecting chronic wasting disease, since the infectious prions accumulate here at an early stage of the disease and can be detected by means of a biopsy.
